Teachers in Chicago have voted overwhelmingly to authorise strike action. 96% voted in favour on a 92% turnout. The teachers are campaigning on a number of fronts, including an end to high stakes testing and a restoration of professional autonomy, which would cost nothing. On the other hand they are also fighting for public schools to be funded properly, with the kinds of resources enjoyed by children in elite public schools, like properly staffed libraries, reasonable class sizes and a rich curriculum.
This is just the latest example of the determination of Chicago's teachers and their union the CTU to defend public education and the communities they serve.
