The Austrian civil service union GOD has given the go-ahead to teachers to strike over the SPD government's reform package. The package includes the clause that teachers should increase their teaching hours from 20 to 22 a week as well as introducing performance related pay and all day care for children. The education minister Claudia Schmied has sent an open letter to teachers accusing their leaders of manipulating them. However teachers' leaders say that apart from the fact that making people work extra hours for no extra pay is unacceptable, the measures would mean the loss of many young teachers. The union has no intention of giving in to Schmied's demands for extra hours and if she does not back down the strike will go ahead.
