Teachers Meeting in Belize last Week to discuss Action Teachers in Belize are preparing to demonstrate and strike in support of a pay rise Teachers in the small, Central American country have voted overwhelmingly for a national demonstration in the capital, Belmopan on January 29th to be folowed by a strike if there is no progress in their claim. Despite having oil reserves and income from tourism, 40% of the population of Belize live in poverty and the country is heavily indebted to the US which is forcing it to cut public spending. The teachers are being fully supported by the Belize Trades Union Congress which says that effectively the teachers have not had a pay rise since 2005.
