Buenos Aires Teachers demonstrating this Week Teachers in Buenos Aires, Argentina have been on strike this week The teachers are striking against new laws which would see their employment and promotion decided by a computerised rating system. Teachers and students protested outside the legislature and some entered the building in order to make their views known. Seven teachers were injured in the protests. Buenos Aires has been run by a right wing mayor - property tycoon Mauricio Macri since 2007, since then there have been massive cuts in education which have been fiercely resisted - both by the teachers and the students. (see previous posts) The teachers see these latest moves as a step towards the privatisation of education in Buenos Aires. Macri says he will extend the term by a week and dock pay from the striking teachers - a move which their leaders describe as provocative. Teachers are now planning another 48 hour strike on November 16 and 17th.
