Teachers in the nation of Catalonia, an autonomous region in Spain are on strike today in defence of public education. Their demands include the restoration of funding which has been cut, smaller class sizes, no more closures of public schools and an end to privatisation.

This is just the latest battle in a long fight over the whole of Spain for public education and against corporate 'reform', not least the entrenching of Spanish and English as the languages of instruction and the downgrading of minority languages like that of Catalonia.

Today's strike will be followed by further action on the 9th February.
