Teachers in Costa Rica went on strike at the end of February to protest at government cutbacks and failure to pay agreed pay rises. The teachers who are members of the Asociacion de Profesores de Segunda Ensenanza (APSE) union are protesting against budget cuts of 7.5 billion colones in the university sector as well as demanding an increase in the slaries of non-professional workers and an end to layoffs. Teachers are also protesting because once again their salaries have not been paid in full.
