Police attacking protesting teachers in Saringar Police attacked teachers in Kashmir this week The teachers who were protesting in Saringar, Kashmir were charged by police with lathi (long batons) and dozens were injured according to reports. The teachers - who are members of the  Jammu and Kashmir teachers forum were demanding the regularisation of their contracts and decent salaries. Many of them were detained by the police. Teachers all over the global south are kept on temporary contracts - in order to save money and in an attempt to enforce compliance. It is a policy which is promoted by the World Bank - and was one of the main strands of its 'solutions' to the problem of 'making schools work' (see: http://www.teachersolidarity.com/blog/world-bank-attacks-global-south-teachers/ )
