Demonstration ealier this Year in Estonia Teachers in Estonia are carrying out their planned three day strike this week The teachers are on strike for a 20% pay increase, while the government has offered 15% but not till 2013, which would only bring their monthly salaries up to 700 euros, way below the national average salary in Estonia. The teachers are being joined in their action today by many other workers - including transport workers, workers in the media, seafarers and healthcare workers, who are taking action to support the teachers' cause and against new labour laws. The head of the Education Personnel Union has said that there will be an even bigger strike in September if the government does not accede to the teachers' demands, according to Estonian Public Broadcasting As I reported in previous posts, Estonia is regarded as one of the most successful states in Eastern Europe since it is relentlessly following neo-liberal economic policies.
