franceblog1.jpg French teachers on strike last week Members of the French teachers union SNES went on strike last Tuesday to protest about budget cuts and to call for increased salaries. The strike last Tuesday which was by secondary teachers was also to protest against a change in conditions of service which would see teachers having to teach two subjects instead of one which is the norm at the moment.  The union is also protesting disparities in conditions between teachers in the provinces and those in the Paris suburbs. Although the union is not calling for a full scale national strike at the moment a series of actions and protests is planned over the coming weeks and it is keeping its options open pending announcements from the education ministry of the right wing Sarkozy government. Schools are also threatened with the loss of thousands of teaching jobs with a knock on effect on class sizes and the quality of education.
