Students occupying a their School in Greece The Greek teachers' union OLME has called a general strike for March 30th to oppose school closuresThe measures being taken by the Greek government would mean the closure of 1056 schools across the country out of a total of some 16000. Students are incensed at the plans and many are occupying their schools, saying that a distance of 18 kilmetres to get to school is unacceptable. Black flags have been hung outside schools which are slated for closure. Parents are angry too and worried about the economic and social impact on communities.Education offices have seen demonstrations by parents and students. OLME says that the closures will mean the loss of 4000 more teaching jobs under conditions where there are already many unemployed teachers in Greece (see previous posts.)
