blog-guat.jpg  a classroom in Guatemala Teachers in Guatemala were threatening strike action from 31st January 2008 to protest at the government's failure to carry out the reforms they had promised during their election campaign. At present the government invests a minute proportion of the Gross Domestic Product on education. Teachers want this increased to at least 3%. The union also wants to see conditions for learners improved -so an improvement in educational supplies and school meals are called for. Many school buildings need repair or rebuilding and this is also one of the demands. And they want to see education improved for indigenous and rural communities. Teachers are demanding to be paid the back pay owed from March 2007. Teachers are choosing this time to act because the election campaign and promises are still fresh in everyone's minds. At the end of January teachers were in discussions with the government to try and avert the strike.
