The Guyana teachers union (GTU) is preparing  for industrial action.  Though negotiations with the government are deadlocked over a wage dispute, the GTU is making the public aware that their battle is about the continued lack of respect for education and the teaching profession, demonstrated in the low salaries and poor working conditions. Hundreds of teachers participated in a meeting at GTU headquarters and Enmore community ground to hear information about the proposed strike.

Teachers work without basic supplies and amidst a crumbling infrastructure. Teachers held a sit-in to protest conditions when a school building almost collapse.  They also provide support services their students need and some take jobs in the countryside so that students do not have to undertake long travel to reach a school.

A petition with more information, publicizing and supporting the GTU and Guyana's teachers is being circulated.
