Baton-wielding Men attacking Teachers Teachers protesting in Sri Lanka were attacked by government hired thugs last week according to reports The teachers - members of the Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) - were demonstrating against the governments' takeover of the Education Department Co-operative Society (EDCS) after the CTSU won the leadership of it. The EDCS is the largest co-operative society in Asia according to one report. About fifty men appeared in buses and cars, and attacked the demonstrators with batons. Three teachers were badly injured and taken to hospital. Leaders of the demonstration say that the thugs were hired by the government to attack the demonstration but that this would not deter teachers from continuing to resist the government's undemocratic moves against the EDCS. Teachersolidarity would very much like to hear from anyone who could give us more information about this struggle.
