hk1.jpg  Teachers Protesting in Hong Kong Hong Kong teachers have been on the streets demanding smaller class sizes In the latest of a series of actions, members of the Hong Kong Professional Teachers Union (HKPTU) demonstrated last week to demand smaller class sizes. At present the average class size is 34 and many pupils are taught in classes of over 40. Ironically the government has introduced a policy of what it calls 'small class teaching' which involves children working in small groups and this policy is begin undermined by the same government's strategy of school closures and therefore oversized classes.  HKPTU has not ruled out an escalation of action including strike action in pursuit of its demands to keep schools open and to lower class size.
