The General Secretary of the Teachers Association of Iran, Esmail Abdi, is to face trial on January 30th. Mr Abdi was put in 'temporary' detention after he was refused permission to attend the world congress of teachers unions (EI) in Ottawa in July. Since then he has had no access either to his family or to his lawyers and has been subjected to 15 hour interrogations for 45 days.

He is charged with 'propaganda against the state' and 'assembly and collusion against national security.' His arrest came against the background of increasing protests by teachers as they fought for proper funding for education during the first half of 2015. Their struggles were met with repression and intimidation from security forces.

Teachers everywhere should be aware of the situation and demand his release.
