Teachers demonstrating in Benin The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has spoken out about the teachers' dispute in Benin The teachers have been on strike since the middle of January in their campaign for decent pay and an end to temporary contracts. The government has responded with insults, attacks on and arrests of teachers, the deregistration of strikers and the use of military conscripts to replace them. The ITUC has condemned the government's actions. Sharon Burrow - ITUC General Secretary said: "This situation is intolerable. Such actions are in breach of workers' fundamental rights." She has written to the Beninese government exhorting them to respect the teachers' demonstratic right to strike.
