Jordanian teachers are on strike a the beginning of the new school term Earlier this year the teachers boycotted the marking of exams in protest against the government's failure to deliver on its promise of a salary increase. Teachers had earlier attempted to present a petition to the king but felt that they had been treated with disrespect and have now moved on to strike action. Teachers are outraged that the government is backtracking on paying them the allowance since it is something which they have been waiting for for 16 years. An Arabic teacher Jihad abu Khalaf told the Jordan Times: "Parents should support us in this. How can they expect us to give our full potential in educating their children if we cannot make ends meet?"
