calblog.jpg  Los Angeles teachers protesting against budget cuts Members of the United Teachers of Los Angeles Union staged a one hour work stoppage and demonstration against budget cuts last Friday. The teachers are protesting against budget cuts by Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration which will mean a $353 million shortfalll and could lead to the laying off of 6,500 probationary teachers. The teachers started work an hour late and demonstrated with parents and students despite attempts by the authorities to have their stoppage declared illegal. Union leaders estimated that 75% of the membership took part in the stopage. They declared themselves satisfied that they had achieved their objective of generating publicity for the appalling state of the Los Angeles education budget.
