Riot police faced thousands of trainee teachers and young people protesting against education cuts, which will mean the loss of teaching jobs and slash grants to trainees by more than half. Moreover trainees will have no guarantee of a job, under conditions where unemployment amongst young people has reached 30%.

Yesterday's demonstration was just the latest in a series, which started in October when the measures were announced. Yesterday the protesters were demanding an end to police violence, which according to Human Rights Watch has resulted in severe head injuries to some protesters. This is a repeat of what happened last year, when trainee teachers were viciously attacked by police.

On Sunday, protesters carried banners accusing the Prime Minister of being a tyrant and urging 'Freedom, Dignity and Social Justice.'
