Teachers, pupils and parents in Christchurch, New Zealand were shocked last week to be told that their schools were to be merged or closed Christchurch suffered a massive earthquake last year and schools have struggled successfully to pick themselves up and provide education. Now however they have been hit out of the blue with the announcement of thirteen school closures and eighteen mergers. Campaigners suspect that the government has an agenda about totally restructuring schools. This situation sounds remarkably like the kind of 'shock doctrine' identified by Naomi Klein - where events like the earthquake in Haiti or the hurricane in New Orleans are turned into an opportunity to completely restructure education systems along neo-liberal lines. The video above (which was picked up by the International Student Movement) makes it clear that teachers, pupils and communities are going to fight back against the wholesale destruction of many of their schools.
