nz-strike.jpg  Teachers Demonstrating last Month Teachers in New Zealand have rejected government attempts to end their dispute and are continuing to take strike action The dispute which is about low pay - a problem which is causing difficulties with recruitment and retention of teachers - is also about education underfunding in general - for example oversized classes. Like governments all over the world the New Zealand government is trying to make public services pay for a crisis which has been caused by the neo-liberal policies which they have been pursuing with vigour. Exactly the same kind of rhetoric is being used in many countries, for example: "Do the teachers really want us to borrow more than that and place a noose around the neck of young New Zealanders?"asks Prime Minister John Key. In fact of course teachers devote their lives to the coming generations while governments pursue the market policies which are threatening their future. Just as in many other countries of the world, teachers in New Zealand are in the leadership of the fight back. To read more about this dispute go to previous posts on this website or www.ppta.org.nz
