Demonstrating against School Closures in New Zealand Teachers in Christchurch, New Zealand are to take action against proposals to merge and close schools. In the wake of the 2011 earthquake, the Christchurch authorities made plans to close or merge dozens of schools in the town. Last month teachers voted by an overwhelming majority to take action if the plans went ahead. The government's plans are against the wishes  of the teachers, of communities and of children, and will not only see schools closed and merged, but also introduce charter schools, with Christchurch being used as a guinea pig for the whole of New Zealand. The New Zealand Education Institute (NZEI), which represents primary school teachers, has said it will go ahead with a strike on the 19th February if the government does not withdraw its plans and that this will be the first of a series of actions.
