nigerblog.jpg A Demonstration in Solidarity with Nigerian Teachers Last Thursday  Further to their three day warning strike in June (see earlier post) primary and secondary teachers in Nigeria are on indefinite strike. Teachers had been promimsed a new salary scale which has still not been paid despite the warning strike by the Nigerian Union of Teachers(NUT)  in June. Teachers are some of the worst paid professionals in Nigeria receiving between $50 and $70 per month. The leader of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU), Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie has promised solidarity action, saying that there was no hope of the millenium development goal of education for all by 2015 to be realised unless teachers were properly paid. The government is blaming the failure to honour its commitments on state governments, yet the new structure for teachers is already included in the state budget.
