panblog.jpg  A Teacher being Arrested in Panama Teachers in the Central American state of Panama have been attacked and arrested for demanding much needed repairs to their schools The leader of the Authentic Association of Independent Teachers, Maria Almanza threatened to call a general strike if the police did not stop repressing and attacking parents and teachers who were campaigning for their schools to be repaired. One school was in such bad condition that the local fire brigade banned the use of four classrooms including the kindergarten because they were unsafe. In addition unsafe glass fibre has been used in the construction of many schools and there are questions being asked about corruption in the giving out of contracts to private companies by the education ministry. Panama is a rich country with the highly profitable canal as well as oil exports and strong links to the US. However it is the second most unequal country in Latin America.
