Parents and students occupied a school in Chicago yesterday in protest against its closure. Lafayette Elementary School was closed yesterday in Chicago, along with 48 other schools, almost all in low income and minority areas, despite a passionate by students, paretns, teachers and the Chicago Teachers Union.

One of the young people occupying, Nidalis Burgos told the that learning the violin at Lafayette had 'brought her from dim to light' and she couldn't bear the thought of other children not having the school around.

The occupiers were supported outside the building by many protesters. Campaigners say that they will continue to fight to save their shools.
