dilapidated-school.jpg  Dilapidated Classroom in Nigeria Drivers in the Oyo province of Nigeria went on strike yesterday in solidarity with the teachers who are in a long runing dispute with the state government over failure to pay their salaries The drivers' union issued a call to strike in a statement headed 'In solidarity with the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT)',  which 'emphasised the roles of teachers in the society, and lamented the fate of the suffering teachers, as well as the pupils'. Meanwhile the government says it will now pay the 27.5% rise to the teachers which has been promised since the beginning of last year although the union has not agreed to call off the strike untill there is a clear time scale for payment. Previous posts on this site have pointed out the lamentably low pay of Nigerian teachers in comparison with the huge wealth being extracted from the country by corporations such as BP.
