Part of February's Demonstration in Lisbon Portuguese teachers are taking part in a general strike tomorrow against government cuts to public services Portugal, like Greece and Ireland has been subject to the dictates of the so-called troika - the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund - which has decreed massive public sector cuts as well as an assault on the rights of all workers to job security and severance pay. The general strike call followed a mass demonstration in the Portuguese capital on February 11th this year against the so-called austerity measures which are designed to make public services and the poor pay for the economic crisis in Portugal. Just as in Greece and so many other countries however - teachers are an important part of the movement to fight back.
