Tacoma Students cheering on their Teachers Tacoma, US teachers stood firm last week despite legal moves to prevent them striking The teachers, who went on strike against a pay cut and against overlarge class sizes, have been told by a judge in Washington State that their strike is illegal. Early last week the judge even suggested that he would give the school district the power to replace striking teachers however the school district were reported as saying they had no plans to do that. The judge is also suggesting that teachers come to court individually and explain why they are defying his order.  The judge gave his order on Wednesday and the teachers gave their answer on Thursday when 93% of the membership gathered at a rally where they reaffirmed their decision to stay out on strike. Many students from Tacoma schools joined the picket lines and hundreds gathered outside the teachers' rally to show their support. Most recent reports say the strike was continuing yesterday and talks were scheduled for the afternoon.
