oaxblog.jpg  Striking Teachers in Oaxaca in 2006 Teachers in the Mexican state of Morelos have been on strike for weeks against a reforrm which would take away their job security The deal was agreed by the leader of the mexican teachers' union SNTE, Elba Ester Gordillo who is President for life and a keen supporter of the neo-liberal goverenment. SNTE like other unions in Mexico is controlled by the government. As well as striking, teachers who have been joined by students and parents have set up motorway blockades and an encampment in the city of Cuernavaca. The Morelos teachers have also been joined by teachers from Oaxaca and from other areas of Mexico. The  strike has been lead by CNTE a rank and file group amongst teachers who oppose the leadership of the SNTE union and the neo-liberal education policies of the Calderon government. 50 teachers have been detained by the state and others are missing and it is feared they have been kidnapped by pro-Gordillo gangs. The teachers in the state of Morelos are in negotiations with the government to try and bring an end to the stand off.
