oaxblog.jpg  the Oaxaca teachers' strike in 2006 Members of Section 22 of the SNTE teachers' union in Mexico have occupied a secondary school in Oaxaca which was under the control of a government controlled section of the union Section 59 of the union which only claims 5,000 members as against section 22's claimed 70,000 was set up by the PRI government in an attempt to defeat the Oaxaca teachers' strike in 2006. Members of Section 22 occupied the school secunduria tecnica 199 on February 15th and have surrounded it with 500 members in an attempt to ward off attacks from the government. The teachers also took part in a demonstration in the central town of Oaxaca calling for the release of people still held after the 2006 strikes which resulted in an estimated 25 deaths and thousands of arrests. They are also calling for the return of all schools held by section 59 and new elections in the SNTE union.
