One of the Teachers Murdered recently in Colombia Two more teachers have been murdered in Colombia over the last month Dionis Alfredo Sierra Vergara was murdered on 15 May and Alejandro José Peñata López on 20 June. Both were members of the Asociación de Maestros de Córdoba – ADEMACOR (teachers’ association of Córdoba). Dionis was a primary school teacher who was assassinated outside his school, Alejandro was a school co-ordinator who was abducted, tortured and murdered. This brings to 20 the number of teacher trade unionists killed in one province of Colombia alone and is entirely in keeping with the vicious history of the Colombian government lead by Juan Manuel Santos and his predecessors which encourages paramilitary killings of trade unionists. Colombia is a country rich in raw materials - BP is the second largest investor and as well as oil, there is coal, emeralds and many valuable metals.
