Teachers in Uruguay have taken strike action in solidarity with students who were violently repressed by security forces when they were occupying an education adminstration building. The students were demanding improved funding for education.

Teachers and students have been engaged in a long campaign in the country both for more education funding and against the criminalisation of protest. Last month, the government declared it illegal for teachers to strike, however this did not stop the teachers from continuing with their action, involving both strikes and school occupations.
