Wednesday's Demonstration in Providence A school district in Rhode Island, USA has dismissed its entire teaching force The 2000 teachers in the district of Providence, Rhode Island have been dismissed by the city authorities because they are going to make a 20% cut in their budgets. The teachers have been dismissed so that they will not have to re-employ those whom the city 'cannot afford.' Presumably this means that more experienced teachers and those who have been promoted are unaffordable and will lose their jobs for good. Steve Smith, President of the Providence Teachers Union told the NPR website that by firing all the teachers the mayor was, "making a political decision to take control and silence workers." Providence is Rhode Island's biggest school district with 80% black and Hispanic students. Many hundreds demonstrated on the steps of City Hall on Wednesday against the moves. Meanwhile the union says that the move to sack 2000 teachers is illegal and it will fight it all the way to the supreme court.
