Teachers in Western Australia went on strike today to fight for pay and conditions and for the protection of education in the state Members of the State School Union of WA rallied in their thousands at Langley Park School and defied an order from the WA Industrial Relations Commission to go back to work. At their rally they condemned the state government for failing to get to grips with the teacher shortage in the state which threatens education for children in state schools. The union believes that a big factor in the shortage is the poor wages and conditions for teachers, particularly the lack of non teaching time to carry out administrative tasks.
