Teachers and other education workers are to strike in Western Australia on Thurdsay agains education cuts. Up to 500 teaching assistants and other support workers are set to lose their jobs as a result of the cuts. The staff will be attending a 'stop-work meeting' at Gloucester Park racecourse in Perth, which will mean that most schools will close.

The State School Teachers Union of Western Australia (SSTUWA) is organising this in conjunction with support staff unions and asking parents and communities to attend the meetings as well (there will be meetings in other towns across the state.) This is the latest shot in a campaign called "Putting our Children First: Stop the Cuts". As well as cutting teaching assistants, the right wing Liberal government of WA is cutting special education programmes and also teaching jobs next academic year. This will result in larger classes, some school closures and remote schools being worst affected.
