Zimbabwe Schoolroom Teachers in Zimbabwe are threatening to go on strike at the beginning of the new term The teachers who are members of the Progressive Teachers Union of  Zimbabwe (PTUZ) are threatening strike action over low pay and police harrassment. Teachers are subject to political surveillance and are harrassed if they are suspected of not supporting ZANU-PF according to the leader of PTUZ. The lowest paid teachers get only $130 a month, and PTUZ is demnading that this should be at least doubled. Apart from their grievances about low pay and harrassment the PTUZ say that education is in a parlous state, with children being turned away from school in some districts if their parents have not paid school fees in advance.
