Teachers, doctors and nurses went on strike on Tuesday in Zimbabwe as the government continued to withhold their pay. In response the government agreed to pay health workers their June salaries by Thursday. Teachers and other public sector workers are demanding that their pay be forthcoming by Tuesday of next week at the latest. Only the security forces have been paid on time.

Last year teachers were brutally attacked as they fought imposed performance related pay measures which would have depressed their meagre salaries still further.

The action by teachers and health workers comes against a background of mass protests against government corruption, injustice and economic hardship. The protests were attacked by police using tear gas and water canon and there have been many reports of arbitrary arrests and police brutality. The protesters are calling for a national strike on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
